Governor Cuomo Visits Educational Alliance to Speak on Gun Violence

October 29, 2019

LESC BHCC partner, Educational Alliance, was honored to host Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in their downtown offices on October 29, 2019, as he discussed New York’s new Red Flag gun safety law.

Also known as the extreme risk protection order, the Red Flag Law prevents individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing any kind of firearm. It went into effect in New York State on August 24, 2019, and is currently one of the strongest gun laws in the nation.

Cuomo’s appearance was part of a statewide education campaign to help educators, school administrators, social workers and parent representatives understand the new law and how to use it to keep schools and communities safe. Holding the conference at Educational Alliance, a 130-year-old fixture in Lower Manhattan, offering individuals and families high-quality programs and services that enhance their well-being, was a logical choice. “The Red Flag Law empowers family members, school officials, and members of law enforcement to offer some sort of gun violence prevention within our communities,” says Educational Alliance Executive Director Robert Anderson. This common-sense approach to public safety could save lives.
